Looking for a friendly social group for gays in the South London area? Then South London Gays — SLG — could be what you're looking for. Set up twenty-four years ago, SLG provides a wide range of events and activities for its members.
SLG's main focus is on the monthly meetings with guest speakers. These take place on the second Tuesday of each month at a pub in Clapham, South London. Speakers have included local MPs, gay writers, religious representatives, journalists, and members of lesbian and gay political groups.
Speakers in the last few months have included:
- Peter Scott-Presland who talked about the great battles over sex education
- Nick de Jongh, former Guardian arts writer and Evening Standard chief theatre critic
- Chris Park from Sutton LGBT Forum
- Matthew Todd, former editor of Attitude Magazine

Another strong feature of SLG activity has been theatre visits. Over the past year visits have ranged from Macbeth and Stoppard's The Real Thing at Putney Arts Theatre, to My Boy Jack by the Southside Players and through to Di and Viv and Rose at the South London Theatre.
The group also arrange regular cinema and restaurant visits, tennis matches, and DVD evenings, tea parties and coffee evenings in members' homes.
Social visits have included exhibitions at Tate Britain and the British Museum, as well as days out to Windsor and Eastbourne. We also went to Pitzhanger Manor and Gallery, Ealing and the Musical Museum, Brentford, as well as The Moon Exhibition, Greenwich. Pub visits and parties with other groups have also become a regular feature of our programme.
Although primarily a social group, SLG has been involved in various letter-writing campaigns on gay issues over many years and is involved in joint events with other gay groups in London and Surrey.
Membership of SLG costs £14 per year (£6 by e-mail) and you do not have to live in South London!
