Looking for a friendly social group for gays in the South London area? Then South London Gays — SLG — could be what you're looking for. Set up twenty-one years ago, SLG provides a wide range of events and activities for its members.
SLG's main focus is on the monthly meetings with guest speakers. These take place on the second Tuesday of each month at a pub in Clapham, South London. Speakers have included local MPs, gay writers, religious representatives, journalists, and members of lesbian and gay political groups.
Speakers in the last few months have included:
- Punch and Times theatre critic, Jeremy Kingston
- The African LGBTI organisation Out and Proud Diamond Group
- Professor Rainer Schulze on the Nazi persecution of gay men
- Author and campaigner Terry Sanderson

Another strong feature of SLG activity has been theatre visits. Over the past year visits have ranged from One Man, Two Guvnors at Putney Arts Theatre, A Brief Gay Encounter at Above the Stag to The Importance of being Earnest by the Southside Players and through to Jesus Christ Superstar at the South London Theatre.
The group also arrange regular cinema and restaurant visits, tennis matches, and DVD evenings, tea parties and coffee evenings in members' homes.
Social visits have included exhibitions at the Wiener Library and the British Museum, as well as days out to Hatfield House and Arundel and a six-day trip to Oporto, Portugal. We also went to the Sir John Soane's Museum and the Imperial War Museum, as well as walks from Waterloo to London Bridge and from Highgate Village to Parliament Hill Fields. Pub visits and parties with other groups have also become a regular feature of our programme.
Although primarily a social group, SLG has been involved in various letter-writing campaigns on gay issues over many years and is involved in joint events with other gay groups in London and Surrey.
Membership of SLG costs £8 per year (£5 by e-mail) and you do not have to live in South London!
